Samsung to Provide Foldable Displays to Xiaomi and Oppo

With efforts to build foldable phones amping up, Samsung, one of the biggest names in the smartphone display market has already started to send out samples to respective clients.

These clients of Samsung Display reportedly include Oppo and Xiaomi, according to Korean news outlet ETNews. While Samsung’s smartphone division competes with these companies, the display division of the Korean giant is among the strongest names in the OLED market, with clients including the likes of Apple as well.

The move could also be seen as a way to woo more companies into the fold, and hence give the market a more mainstream appeal. Both Oppo and Xiaomi are popular in China and the lower end of the markets and could give the industry a vital boost.

Coming in 2019?

It is unlikely that the two Chinese companies will release a smartphone before Samsung since the company plans to launch its first foldable phone later this year. However, some portion of the market at least will dismiss the phones as gimmicky before some of the bigger firms step in.

Samsung Displays is one of Samsung’s two biggest subsidiaries, alongside their semiconductors business, and bigger than its smartphones division.

Seeing increased competition from the likes of LG, it is clear that the foldable panel market could be one of the biggest areas of growth in the future, with the potential to reach a million units by next year and up to 5 million units by the end of 2020. It remains to be seen how Oppo and Xiaomi respond.
