Saqib Aziz Appointed as CEO of PIA

PIA has appointed Saqib Aziz, who is an ex-bureaucrat, as the Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). He will be the airlines’ 4th CEO in two years.

Federal government issued the notification approving Saqib Aziz as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PIA on Thursday. Aziz has a long experience in matters of administration after holding a variety of offices in the government.

The statement goes “the federal government has been pleased to approve the grant of additional charge of CEO of PIA to Saqib Aziz (BS 22), secretary aviation with immediate effect and until further orders.”

PIA spokesperson Mashhood Tajwer said, “Secretary aviation has been given the additional charge of PIA chairman after the government transferred former secretary aviation (PIA chairman) to the Establishment Division recently”. The appointment was finalized in a meeting of airline’s board of directors, as the chair had remained vacant for a week.

Soon after assuming the charge, Aziz conducted meetings with chiefs of different departments as well as top-tier management of the airline.

There’s a lack of information about the new appointee’s prior experience in aviation-related matters. Aviation related experience became a matter of concern when the Supreme Court of Pakistan terminated the previous CEO of PIA for lacking the relevant expertise before sacking him.
