Over 5,000 Fake Accounts Were Used to Launder Money From Pakistan

The government has claimed to have unearthed more than 5,000 fake bank accounts that were used to launder black money out of the country.

Shahzad Akbar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Accountability, made this announcement during a press conference on Monday.

Supported by PTI Senator Faisal Javed and Advisor to PM Iftikhar Durrani, Shahzad was sharing the progress made by the assets recovering unit.

The unit, which was made to bring back the illegal money parked abroad, includes members from the State Bank (SBP) of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and other watchdogs.

“During the last ten years, properties of $15 billion were created abroad,” Shahzad revealed adding that assets worth $5.3 billion (Rs. 700 billion) were made in Dubai alone.

“$1.5 billion in properties bought in Dubai are a small estimated faction of the ill-gotten money [laundered abroad],” added Akbar.

He also said that previous rulers acquired Iqamas to stash ill-gotten money abroad, adding that the unit was in contact with the Dubai authorities and a local mechanism to collect further details of all Iqama holders with the help of Dubai authorities.

“We are also in talks with Britain in this regard. The British leadership is cooperating because they’ve seen that this time the Pakistani leadership is itself not corrupt,” Akbar told the media.

Speaking on the occasion, Iftikhar Durrani said the accounts were identified during the investigation of an ongoing case.

“We have gathered enough information about the fake accounts case, we will reveal each and every detail once a reference is filed in the court,” said Durrani.
