PEC to Offer Interest-Free Loans to Young Engineers

Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Chairman Engineer Jawed Salim Qureshi has announced that the council would offer interest-free loans to young engineers.

PEC will form an Engineering Construction Bank to provide interest-free loans to young engineers so that they can establish their own startups.

The chairman said that an entrepreneurship culture needs to be developed among engineers, given the market condition and unemployment challenges. He also said that the engineering council is well equipped to assist in the construction of dams if it gets the opportunity.

Addressing the annual convention of Pakistan Society of Agricultural Engineers at University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), Qureshi said that Pakistan is capable of producing low-priced electricity.

He said that the high cost of electricity is taking a toll on exports. Stressing the importance of agriculture for the national economy, he said that the sector is directly linked to poverty alleviation.

“Collaborated efforts are needed for supporting the farming community, the downtrodden segment of society, and to promote modern and smart technology for increasing per-acre productivity,” he said.

The chairman underlined that government departments concerned with engineering should have engineers on top positions to give better results.

UAF Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ashraf said that the gap in the industry-academic linkages needs to be narrowed down. “Engineers should come up with low-cost agro-technology for small farms so that per-acre production can be increased manifold,” he said.
