Amazon Replaces Apple as the Most Valuable Brand in the World

According to a recent report by BrandZ, Amazon has just become the most valuable brand in the world. Amazon was the third most valuable brand in 2018, behind Apple and Google, but rose to the top thanks to a 52% year-on-year increase in value.

Here’s the latest list of the top brands around the world:

Amazon’s brand value is now worth $315 billion, leaving Apple ($309.5 billion) and Google ($309 billion) neck and neck at second and third place. Microsoft sits firmly at fourth place with a total value of $251 billion.

The Seattle based retailer Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos in his garage in 1994, topped the ranks thanks to key acquisitions, superior customer service, and a disruptive business model.

“Amazon’s smart acquisitions, that have led to new revenue streams, excellent customer service provision and its ability to stay ahead of its competitors by offering a diverse ecosystem of products and services, have allowed Amazon to continuously accelerate its brand value growth,” said global market research agency Kantar.

It is important to differentiate between “most valuable brand” and largest company by “market share”. Microsoft is currently the top dog in terms of market cap, at around $1016 billion, followed by Amazon at $916 billion and Apple with $751 billion.

American Companies Continue to Dominate

The list is dominated by American companies once again, with only two Chinese brands in the top 10.

For the first time, Alibaba beat Tencent to become the most valuable Chinese brand in the world. E-commerce leader Alibaba is currently the seventh biggest brand at $131.2 billion up two places from the previous year. Whereas Tencent fell three spots to stand at number eight with a value of $130.9 billion.

McDonald’s and AT&T sit at the bottom of the list with a brand value of $130 billion and $108 billion respectively.
