Google is Testing a Video Play/Pause Button for Chrome

It appears that Google will soon be adding a media button to its Chrome browser that would make it possible to pause/play a video regardless of what tab it’s playing from.

The new feature is named Global Media Controls (GMC) and has been enabled this week in Chrome’s testing platform, the Chrome Canary distribution.

Once enabled, a play button will appear next to the URL bar if you have a video playing in any tab. By clicking on it, a larger control pops up that lets you pause, play, or skip forward/backward without actually going to the video itself.

The button works with both audio and video content and will work across multiple Chrome windows, meaning users will be able to pause a video that’s playing in a different window altogether.

Still in Early Testing

The GMC pause/play button will be added to the desktop version of Chrome for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. No word on Chrome OS, but it’s very likely that the button will work there as well. There is currently no ETA on it.

Right now the feature is very buggy and crashes almost every time if you try to pause/play a video, but things are expected to work smoothly in future versions.

If you want to give it a shot, you can download the Canary browser from here then enable the flag chrome://flags/#global-media-controls.
