Thundershowers, Urban Flooding Predicted in Punjab

The Meteorological Department predicts that urban flooding will occur in various cities of Central and Upper Punjab.

The Met Office issued the warning on Friday saying that widespread rainfall due to new weather system may cause flooding in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi division.

The northern half of the country is expected to receive a week-long spell of thundershowers (from Friday to Thursday) as the monsoon season is setting in, it said.

“Moderate monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea were continuously penetrating in the north-eastern region.  They are expected to strengthen in upper parts of the country from Friday evening or night,” the forecast said.

It added that the Westerly wave is also likely to hit the upper parts of the country by Sunday.

The new weather system may cause heavy and moderate showers with windstorms in Kashmir, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu divisions from Friday.

Scattered rain and dust thundershowers are also likely in the isolated parts of Zhob, D.I.Khan, D.G.Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal from Sunday to Thursday.
