Novak Djokovic held his nerve towards the end of a thrilling final to save two match points and clinch his 5th Wimbledon title and 16th overall Major.
The Serbian beat Roger Federer’s record and became the oldest Grand Slam champion in the longest ever final played in the tournament.
The contest between both will go down in the history books as the top seed was largely outplayed by the Swiss. But Djokovic came back in the game to win the tie 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 13-12 (7/3).
It is worth pointing out that throughout the match, Federer finished with 25 aces and 94 winners to Djokovic 10 aces and 54 winners.
This was the longest Wimbledon final ever, which lasted for 4 hours and 57 minutes. The match was eventually settled by a tie-break, first time in the history of the game.
This title victory has put Djokovic on level terms with Bjorn Borg, who has also won the Wimbledon tournament five times.
I think that if this is not the most exciting final, then it is definitely in the top two or three of my career against one of the greatest players of all time, Roger, who I respect.
Unfortunately, in this type of match, someone has to lose. It is quite unreal to be two match points down to come back and strange to play a tie-break at 12-12.
It was long and it had everything. I had answers, so did he and we played some great tennis. I hope I give some other people at 37 the feeling it is not over yet.
