Shireen Mazari Removes an Alleged Torturer as Focal Person for Human Rights

The Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari has removed Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Iftikhar Lund as the focal person for Sindh.

Iftikhar, who belongs to an influential family of Ghotki, was given the position earlier this month despite being accused of torturing his driver. A case was also registered against him.

On July 10, the minister had tweeted a picture with Iftikhar along with the appointment notification.

His appointment received fierce criticism on social media, but the ruling party didn’t budge, probably because it was facing a neck-to-neck competition in Ghotki by-elections.

However, days after the election – which the PTI-backed candidate lost to PPP – Iftikhar was removed from the post with a new notification that said he was found guilty in the ‘reinvestigation’ of the case.

Mazari took to Twitter again expressed ‘regret’ over her previous decision.

In re-investigation and in the light of new evidence I have removed Iftikhar Lund as our focal person on human rights in Sindh. I also wish to express my regret over the earlier notification.

The Background

In the last week of April, his driver Allah Rakhio had a disagreement with one of Iftikhar’s cousins. The same night, Iftikhar called him at his residence where he, along with his cousins, beat him with a steel rod and recorded the whole incident.

The incident got the attention of mainstream media when Rakhio’s video went viral on social media. In the video, he could be seen lying on his back on a stretcher demanding justice while receiving medical treatment.

His medical report said that Rakhio received eight stitches after a metal rod was forcefully inserted in his rectum.

Iftikhar somehow managed to get a clean chit from the court. He also recorded a clarification video claiming he was ‘framed.’

    • No, powerful and wealthy people are exempt from the law in Pakistan. They remain “alleged” criminals at best. The law is just for poor people like us.
