Nearing Collapse, Govt Schools in Islamabad to Finally Undergo Maintenance

The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has been ordered to prepare a plan for improving the state of public school buildings.

The directorate was ordered by the Sub Committee of the Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training.

Members of the committee observed that the condition of some of the public school buildings in Islamabad is so bad that they can come crashing down on the students at any time.

The committee was briefed about repair, maintenance, and scrutiny as well as budget allocation for education.  Senator Rana Maqbool said that the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training should carry out the repair and maintenance of the public schools on an urgent basis.

He said that school buildings are in such a sorry state they can cause deaths by collapsing at any time. Officials apprised the committee that the ministry has carried out a baseline survey in 423 institutions to assess the situation.

The officials told the committee members that 90 percent of the education budget goes to the employees’ salaries. They said that a survey has been conducted to chalk out a plan for the reconstruction of the infrastructure of schools.

The committee recommended that funds should be allocated for the repair and maintenance of schools’ boundary walls and other infrastructure in Islamabad.
