Govt to Establish New Water Regulatory Authority for Punjab

The Punjab government has decided to establish a water and sewerage authority to effectively control the issues related to underground and drinking water.

The provincial-level independent authority will include all five water and sewerage agencies (WASA) of Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Multan.

The government has prepared a draft bill in this regard, which will be tabled before the provincial cabinet for approval in the meeting.

The Managing Director of WASA, Syed Zahid Aziz, said that the move will revolutionize Punjab’s water sector.

He maintained that the initiative will help a long way in the development, operation, and maintenance of water supply and sewerage systems in the province. It will also help in preserving the underground and other water resources in Punjab, he added.

Punjab’s Water and Sewerage Authorities and Regulatory Authority Act 2019, enables the province to establish new authorities as it deems appropriate.

The draft law, which is also awaiting approval, includes the merger of all WASA agencies into one independent authority governed by a board of directors.

Members from different provincial departments will be part of the BoD, while the provincial government will appoint its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
