Govt Shuts Down Social Media Cell 6 Months After Formation: Report

On Thursday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led federal government announced to shut down the social media cell it had set up just six months ago. According to the reports, the government did not have enough funds at its disposal to pay the salaries of the employees at the social media cell.

On the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, a social media cell was established at the Press Information Department (PID) with the aim to curb the spread of fake news and issue verified information to the citizens.

However, the government has decided to shut down its social media cell and fire all serving employees with immediate effect.

Some of the fired employees argued that their services have been terminated without any prior notice. The government is yet to pay the salaries of the previous two months, said an employee.

Reports claim that some renowned social media activists and volunteers of PTI have emerged as the front runners to lead the social media cell in the immediate future.
