MediaTek Announces Helio G80 Gaming Chip for Mid-range Phones

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is expanding its lineup of mid-range gaming SoCs with Helio G80. As the name suggests, the chipset sits between the Helio G70 and G90 in terms of performance.

The company’s G series of chipsets are aimed at providing an incredible gaming experience in smartphones while being affordable at the same time. The first two chipsets in the series, namely the Helio G90 and G90T debuted in the Redmi Note 8 and later the Helio G70 was announced for budget devices.

In terms of performance, the Helio G80 comes with slightly higher CPU and GPU clock speeds than the G70. It is essentially an overclocked version of the Helio G70 since there are no other differences.

The Mediatek Helio G80 is based on the 12nm FinFet process similar to other budget and mid-range chipsets. It comes with two of ARM’s high-performance Cortex A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and two lower-end Cortex A55 cores with 1.8GHz frequency.

The GPU is a Mali-G52 MC2 clocked at 950MHz. It has support for the HyperEngine Game Technology that allows seamless switching between Wi-Fi and 4G for uninterrupted gameplay.

The SoC supports up to 8GB of LPPDR4X RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage instead of UFS. It can also handle up to 48-megapixel camera units but lacks support for dedicated AI accelerators found on the Helio G90.

Compared to Qualcomm’s chipsets, the Helio G80 is the closest to the Snapdragon 710 in terms of performance.
