Quetta Gladiators’ batsman Azam Khan had received plenty of criticism from cricketing fans for breaking into the team not due to his abilities but his father, Moin Khan, who is the coach of PSL defending champions.
However, Azam’s match-winning knock in PSL opener against Islamabad United has turned his critics into admirers.
All along the way, there was one person who kept faith in Azam and believed that he will ultimately deliver. The person was none other than Quetta Gladiators’ skipper, Sarfraz Ahmed.
In November 2017, Sarfraz rebutted reports suggesting that Gladiators picked Azam just because he is the son of 1992 world cup winning wicketkeeper Moin Khan.
3 years ago, Sarfraz Ahmed predicted this about Azam:
Azam khan has been performing well in domestic cricket. He is pure T20 material, for which Gladiators have picked him. Once he plays in PSL, I don’t think anybody will question his selection.
Certainly, Azam Khan has justified his selection last night as he posted a blistering 59 of just 33 balls at a strike rate of 178.78. The 21-year-old hit five 4s and three 6s.
Azam Khan crafted a 62 run partnership with Sarfraz after the Gladiators found themselves 3 down at 26 inside 5 overs against the 2 times PSL champions.
