In their quest to provide consumers with an uninterrupted, full-screen smartphone, several smartphone OEMs have come up with intriguing tech from pop-up camera mechanisms to flip cameras. However, these only mean added moving parts and compromised durability. To tackle the issue, smartphone manufacturers have been working on in-display cameras. Where the tech was already available in the industry, companies were waiting for it to mature before they incorporate it in a commercially available smartphone.
However, taking the first step, the Chinese smartphone OEM ZTE has launched ZTE Axon 20 5G, the first commercially-ready smartphone with an under-display selfie camera.
Design and Display
Design-wise the smartphone features a glossy back with a paint job mimicking rays of light. At the front, it has an uninterrupted full-screen 6.92-inch OLED display with think bezels, FHD+ resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate, 10bit color output, and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio.
To improve the under-display camera’s quality and prevent any loss of light, the display comes with a special film coating on the screen layers, which is highly transmissive and transparent. Moreover, ZTE reworked the pixel arrangement around the camera’s lens, so it matches the rest of the display without any noticeable color distortion.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G will be available in black, white, purple, and orange colors.
Internals and Storage
This first of its kind smartphone is powered by the upper midrange Snapdragon 765G chipset topped with 6 GB or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB onboard memory. The software front is covered by ZTE’s Mifavor 10.5 on top of Android 10.
Cameras
Around the back, the smartphone boasts a quad-camera array with a 64MP primary shooter, an 8MP ultrawide snapper, and two 2MP units for depth data and macro shots.
Under the display, there is a 32MP selfie cam, which comes with a dedicated light perception sensor that regulates the amount of light needed for each scenario. On top of this, the pictures go through a new processing algorithm to optimize image clarity.
Battery and Pricing
ZTE Axon 20 5G is fueled by a 4,220 mAh battery with 30W fast charging.
It will be available for sale in China by 10th September and will cost only $322 for the base variant and $410 for the maxed-out variant.
