Police is Now Using CNICs to Punish Criminals

Giving e-policing a whole new meaning, the Chiniot Police is blocking Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) of proclaimed offenders (POs).

District Police Officer (DPO), Bilal Zafar, revealed that they have blocked 128 CNICs over the last month. According to him, the move yielded results as eight of the criminals surrendered before the police to obtain bails from the court.

Zafar maintained that the district has a total of 603 proclaimed offenders, while police have the CNICs of 317 of them.

“Chiniot Police has blocked CNICs of 128 of them and moved the cases of 116 POs to district and sessions court for blocking of bank accounts and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for blocking of SIMs,” he said.

The DPO stated that they seek the National Database & Registration Authority’s (NDARA) assistance to trace the CNICs of remaining offenders through their family trees.

Bilal added that the decision to block CNICs is in line with the Supreme Court’s orders in a relevant verdict.
