Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Seth Dies of Coronavirus

Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice, Waqar Ahmed, has died of coronavirus at 59.

Justice Waqar was admitted to Islamabad’s Kulsum International Hospital, where he received treatment for COVID-19 for over two weeks before succumbing to it late on Thursday.

Justice Seth became the Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court on June 28, 2018. He has since passed various bold judgments, including the death sentence for former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf in the high treason case. Pakistan’s legal team presented Justice Seth’s rulings before the International Court of Justice in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case.

He also overturned the conviction of dozens of citizens who were tried in the military courts. He survived several assassinations during his career.

An activist and a big fan of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Justice Waqar Seth was famous for not charging a fee for labor cases.

Condolences Pour In

Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Arif Alvi, and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, among others, offered their condolences for the passing of the top judge.

Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter:

President Arif Alvi expressed grief over the sad demise of Justice Waqar.

May his soul rest in peace and may Allah give strength to his family to bear this loss.

General Bajwa also condoled his death and prayed for the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and other judges of the Supreme Court also expressed deep sorrow and grief over the demise of Justice Seth in a statement.
