Investigations of Rs. 300 Billion Auction Scandal in Final Stage

The investigation of the illegal auctions of vehicles is currently in its conclusive stages as the convicted identified as Khurram Gujjar’s employees and frontmen, Kasur Abbas and Arazi Shah, along with a few others have confessed to their crimes and have revealed the details of their criminal activities.

A media report suggests that the operation has caused Rs. 300 billion worth of losses to the national exchequer. The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has shared a letter confirming the missing records of 4,397 vehicles with the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE). Additionally, the officials from the Excise and Taxation Department who were involved in the scandal have reportedly been summoned before the authorities for further investigations.

The report also states that the department has submitted the details of the vehicles that had been registered to be auctioned off between 2015 and 2018 to the ACE. According to the data, 7013 vehicles had been registered on auction vouchers during this period.

Of these vehicles, 1,290 had been registered in the name of Khurram Gujjar’s employee, Kasur Abbas. However,  Kasur Iqbal has denied his affiliation with any of the vehicles registered in his name in his statement to the ACE investigation team.

ACE officials added that 996 vehicles had been registered in the name of the stamp dealer, Ali Arzi Shah, over the last three years. Meanwhile, Shah has also denied his affiliation with the vehicles registered in his name.

The report also mentions that the Excise and Taxation Department does not have data on 4200 vehicles that were registered for the auction between 2015 and 2018. The auction vouchers have reportedly been sent to the concerned agencies for verification.

Furthermore, details about the buyers of these vehicles are being obtained from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The ACE has informed the media that the investigation will be completed within a few days once the interrogations by the Excise and Taxation Department officers are completed. Its officials have affirmed that more details about the case will be revealed once the investigation ends and that the department will do whatever it takes to ensure the recovery of the damages to the economy by the scandal.
