SAPM for Environment Announces Govt’s Plans for Registration of EVs in Pakistan

The Government of Pakistan has reportedly devised a formula for the registration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the country. The news came from the Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) for Environment, Malik Amin Aslam, during his interview with a mainstream news outlet.

The SAPM announced that the entire ‘formula’ for the registration of EVs has been included in the EV policy and that all the issues pertaining to the registration have been addressed in it.

He revealed that a special inter-ministerial committee, of which he himself is an active member, had been formed for the matter, and that it had finalized and approved the policy.

Both the Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, and the Minister for Industry and Production, Hammad Azhar, are huge proponents of normalizing the use of EVs in the country and are also members of the committee.

SAPM Aslam stated that the committee has also formulated and planned certain incentives for the imports, registration, duties, and other owner-related concerns of EV users.

He added that the paramount purpose of the policy is to encourage the big automakers to manufacture EVs in Pakistan.

The government is negotiating special electricity rates with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to decrease both the production costs and the costs for the charging of EVs.

The SAPM also explained that the incentives devised by the government will collectively reduce the running costs of EVs by 60 percent.
