Eight Pakistani nurses and midwives have been included in the international list of 100 Outstanding Women Nurses and Midwives.
Women in Global Health (WGH) had collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Population Fund, Nursing Now, the International Council of Nurses, and the International Confederation of Midwives to acknowledge the healthcare workers.
All eight nurses and midwives are faculty members and alumnae of the Aga Khan University’s (AKU) School of Nursing & Midwifery, SONAM.

According to a statement issued by the AKU, 100 nurses and midwives from 43 countries have been listed for their valuable services in improving public health standards “especially during these difficult times”.
The Dean of SONAM, Dr. Rozina Karmaliani, has been recognized under the ‘Board and Management’ category and her services have been acknowledged for highlighting research potential in the fields of adolescent health and nursing and integrating this research into education and practice.
“It is an honor to be acknowledged by the international public health and nursing fraternity. This year has been particularly challenging for healthcare providers, all of whom have shown incredible commitment in their respective roles in responding to the COVID-19 crisis,” she said.
The AKU’s faculty members Yasmin Parpio and Samina Vertejee have been honored under the Community Hero category for their contributions to community health nursing, and Saima Sachwani has been nominated for her services in developing an impactful nursing curriculum in the Human Capital Development category.

Nurse-midwife Marina Baig has been nominated for the Innovation, Science, and Health category for her contribution to mobile health technology for the enhancement of maternal health outcomes.
Additionally, three SONAM alumni, namely Dr. Shela Hirani, Neelam Punjani, and Sadaf Saleem have been recognized for their services under the Community Hero category.
