Sony Unveils Xperia 1 III With World’s First Variable Zoom Camera and 120Hz 4K OLED Display

Sony has just announced its latest flagship device at its product launch event, the Xperia 1 III. This was launched alongside the Xperia 5 III and Xperia 10 III phones, with the former being a smaller flagship phone and the latter a mid-range device. Xperia 10 III also happens to be Sony’s first 5G mid-range phone.

Sony is yet to reveal detailed specifications and pricing for these phones, but the handsets are set to go on sale in the US in summer, so that is when we expect to hear more.

Design and Display

The Sony Xperia 1 III features the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. It is a 6.5-inch screen with a wide 21:9 aspect ratio, making it narrower and taller than most phone screens. You still get the classical top and bottom bezels with no punch-holes or notches. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side atop the power button.

You also get a snappy 240Hz touch sampling rate, which is ideal for gaming.

There are three cameras arranged in a vertical layout at the back, just like the Xperia 1 II. You also get IP68 dust and water resistance.

Internals and Storage

The main chipset, as we already know, is the 5nm Snapdragon 888 SoC. You get up to 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage options which are further expandable through a microSD card slot housed in the SIM tray.

The phone will boot Android 11 with Sony’s custom UI on top.

Gaming Features

Sony has added motion blur reduction for select games which is a welcome addition next to the 120Hz refresh rate display. It also has a Low Gamma Raiser feature to enhance lighting in dark areas in games for better visibility.

There’s also a sound equalizer that enhances footsteps and gunshot sounds while the microphone cancels out background noise in voice chat and clears up your speech. Sony’s Rewind Time feature records the last 30 seconds of your gameplay to save special highlights automatically.

360 Reality Audio

The new dual speakers are 40% louder than before and also support Sony’s 360 Reality Audio format. This makes sure that all your music sounds crystal clear with an immersive surround sound effect with headphones as well as the built-in dual speakers.

Cameras

As for cameras, the Xperia 1 III features three 12MP units on the back. The main camera is accompanied by an ultrawide lens and a unique telephoto camera with variable zoom capability. These cameras come with ZEISS branding, much better autofocus, and better focal length. The zoom camera can now go from 2.9x to a 4.4x optical zoom.

The main camera can record 4K videos at 120FPS in crisp slow motion. It also has support for Optical SteadyShot to stabilize videos.

The front camera is no different from before, being an 8MP sensor identical to the previous model.

Battery and Pricing

The 4,500 mAh battery cell is paired with 30W fast charging which can charge up the phone from 0 to 50% in only 30 minutes. Sony promises that the battery will remain usable for at least 3 years without needing replacements.

As mentioned earlier, the pricing is yet to be revealed and we will update this space as soon as there is more info.
