Founder of Adobe and Creator of PDFs Charles Geschke Dies at 81

American software company Adobe has confirmed that Co-Founder Dr. Charles “Chuck” Geschke has died on April 16th at the age of 81. While it is confirmed that he has passed away, the causes remain unknown.

He launched Adobe in 1982 alongside Dr. John Warnock after leaving Xerox. He served as the COO, president, and board chairman of the company from 1986 to 2017. He was also a board member until April 2020, but it’s the technology he helped develop that he will be remembered by as it is still being widely used across the globe.

Geschke is known for developing PostScript, a page description language that enabled desktop publishing in the 1980s. He and Warnock also have a significant role in developing Portable Document Format, also known as PDFs, which are widely used around the world for documents and other paperwork.

This technology had the ability to preserve layouts regardless of software or platform and it was groundbreaking when it was first introduced in 1993. It quickly became a crucial piece of tech for everyday tasks and more.

Geschke is also known for creating the Tech Museum of Innovation alongside Warnock, which is now known as Tech Interactive. He also won a National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Obama in 2009.
