Will Cyclone Tauktae Hit Karachi?

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Sunday that Cyclone Tauktae has changed direction and will not pose a major threat to Pakistan’s coastline.

The Met Office said in a statement that the cyclone had changed its direction when it was around 1,300 km away from Karachi. The system with winds of 100 to 120 kph gusting to 140 kph had been moving north-westward at a speed of 18 kph.

However, the cyclonic activity had caused dust/thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfalls in various parts of Sindh, including the Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Sanghar districts of Sindh.

The dusty winds blowing at a speed of 36 to 40 kph had reduced to 2 kph near the Jinnah International Airport.

The government of Sindh has imposed an emergency in all the districts located along the coastline belt and has directed the concerned departments to take precautionary measures to meet any situation that might result from these conditions.

This was decided during a meeting chaired by the provincial Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, in Karachi. The meeting also barred fishermen from going into the deep sea this week.

Furthermore, the Karachi weather department has advised people not to travel between 11 AM and 4 PM to avoid getting sunstroke.

The provincial government has set up a Central Control Cell at the New Sindh Secretariat Building for the Tropical Cyclone Tauktae. The cyclone is likely to make landfall in the Indian state of Gujarat by Tuesday.
