The Criteria

To compile a list of the world’s most affordable countries for each year, GOBankingRates collects and analyze the following metrics from all the countries:

  • Rent index
  • Local purchasing power index
  • Consumer price index
  • Groceries index

It then assigns each country an average score using these metrics. The score of each country is compared with New York which serves as a benchmark with a score of 100.

Countries with a score lower than the score of New York are attributed as affordable countries while those with a higher score are attributed as expensive.

For instance, Pakistan’s score of 18.58 means it is way more affordable than New York. On the other hand, the Cayman Islands’ score of 141.64 means it is way more expensive than New York.
