AGP Reveals the Real Reason Why Islamabad Airport’s Ceiling Leaks After Every Rain

The Auditor General of Pakistan’s (AGP) report on the leakage of the New Islamabad Airport’s ceiling has exposed the shortcomings of the expensive drainage system.

The report, available with ProPakistani, highlights the negligence of the administration in the installation of Rs. 72 million worth of siphon drainage system for the ceiling of passenger terminal building.

It said that the drainage system failed on the night of 13th and 14th August 2020 due to heavy rains in the twin cities, and the drainage water overflew from Concours Hall, Domestic Arrival Lounge, CIP Lounge, and International Departure Area, causing the false ceiling to come off at various spots.

“The audit observed that either a suitable drainage system was not adopted or the siphon system was not properly designed and executed as per the rain data of the area,” the report said, adding that the losses caused by failed drainage system are yet to be determined.

It concluded that irregularity occurred due to lack of technical control, poor estimation, and inadequate internal control mechanism.

The audit authorities raised the issue in August 2020, but the management did not respond. The report has suggested action against those responsible.
