Sindh’s Education Minister Outlines Conditions for Schools Reopening Next Week

Sindh Minister for Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, has announced that only the schools that have their 100 percent teaching and non-teaching staff vaccinated will be reopened from 30 August.

During an interview, Syed Sardar Shah said that the provincial government had decided to keep the schools closed for one more week for two reasons; one of which was that the school staff was not 100 percent vaccinated.

“Private schools said in a report that they had only 73 percent of the staff vaccinated,” the minister said, adding that the government has provided additional time for teachers to get inoculated and present their vaccination certificates to authorities concerned by 30 August.

“Another reason was the fear of COVID-19 spread after Muharram,” he explained.

He noted that vaccination in government schools had increased due to the suspension of staff salaries.

The education minister added that he will meet the private school associations on Monday to chalk out a plan for the complete reopening of educational institutions. He warned that any school that violated closure orders on Monday will face legal action.

Note that the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, had announced the closure of educational institutions until next week on Friday in a press conference. He had said that the decision was taken on the recommendation of the health department, which feared a sharp spike in the coronavirus cases following Muharram processions.
