Vivo to Launch a Self Developed Chip Next Month With X70

Vivo and Oppo are planning to launch self-developed Image Signal Processor (ISP) chips soon, similar to Xiaomi’s Surge C1. In layman’s terms, the two companies are going to develop their own camera chips for smartphones. Vivo’s in-house ISP chip may be called “Yueying” and it could launch as soon as next month.

The report from the Chinese tech blog IT Home also claims that the Vivo X70 could be the first smartphone to pack the new in-house chip.

Vivo appears to be quite determined in producing its in-house chip as its planning to have a team of 500-600 employees for this department. This was revealed by Vivo VP Hu Baishan, who also said that the company has been working on this project since 2019.

Vivo is also looking to hire several new employees for the Research and Development of Yueying and plans to pay them handsomely.

We have seen reports of Vivo working on its own SoC as well to go against the likes of MediaTek and Qualcomm. The product categories covered by the trademark of Vivo’s SoC include central processing units, modems, computer chips, printed circuits, and computer storage.

But there is no more information on Vivo’s mysterious SoC so far.

Vivo also plans to invest a huge amount for the research and development of 5G, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies. Its sister company Oppo is also working on similar technologies and its chip development team reportedly consists of more than 1000 members.
