Samsung’s Bixby Voice Assistant to Get Generative AI Features

Despite rumors of its demise, Samsung confirms Bixby is here to stay. The company’s mobile chief, TM Roh, announced Bixby will receive a major upgrade later this year with the integration of generative AI technology.

This means Bixby will become smarter and more capable, using Samsung’s own artificial intelligence models. Unlike previous speculation, this upgrade won’t involve a partnership with Google or OpenAI, at least for now.

The good news for users who like choice is that Samsung will still allow multiple voice assistants on its devices. This means you’ll be able to use the new, AI-powered Bixby alongside Google’s upcoming Gemini assistant (replacing Google Assistant) and even download the ChatGPT app, though it might not be as seamlessly integrated with the operating system.

Samsung hinted at a smarter Bixby powered by artificial intelligence earlier this year, but details on its arrival were scarce. While an exact release date remains under wraps, it’s possible the AI-powered Bixby might appear alongside Samsung’s new One UI 7 software update, built for the upcoming Android 15. However, this hasn’t been officially confirmed by Samsung.

While speaking to CNBC, Samsung’s TM Roh said:

We’re going to advance Bixby with application of Gen AI technology. We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products. As consumers use more AI capabilities they can actually feel the convenience and benefits they bring. I believe strongly that Galaxy AI and mobile AI are strong motivations and drivers for the purchase of new products.
