Spotify Gets a Long Overdue Security Feature Out of Nowhere

Many online services have long offered two-factor authentication (2FA) for extra account security. This requires a login code in addition to your password. SMS text messages, emails, or special apps can deliver these codes.

Spotify appears to be finally joining the game but in a limited way. Reports suggest a basic 2FA system is being tested on a small group of regular users. This early version lacks user control to activate, deactivate, or choose the delivery method for the code.

Right now, the system reportedly only delivers the 2FA code via email, with no option for users to choose a different method or manage the feature itself. This suggests it’s a very early test phase.

Since there’s no official announcement, we can assume Spotify is still ironing out the details. Hopefully, they’ll refine the system before a wider rollout.

It’s important to note that even this basic approach is a positive step. Having some form of 2FA is better than none, especially considering past hacks where stolen login information compromised Spotify Premium accounts. A robust 2FA system would prevent such breaches, and that’s something we hope to see from Spotify in the future.

Spotify already offers a more advanced 2FA system for artist accounts, including options for code delivery via text message and dedicated security apps. This suggests the basic email-only version for regular users is likely a temporary step. In simpler terms, if Spotify can do it for artists, it shouldn’t be long before regular users get the same improved security features.
