Pakistan Among The Fastest Growing Populations in The World: PBS

According to the country’s first-ever Digital Census conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics in 2023, Pakistan’s population growth rate is the highest in the region and among the highest globally.

At the current growth rate, the country’s population is expected to double by 2050.

One in three Pakistanis i.e. 29.75 percent of the local population is single (unmarried), while 65.97 percent are married. Widows make up 3.78 percent of the population, and the divorce rate stands at 0.35 percent.

The latest report indicates that there are 2.126 million Afghanis, Bengalis, Chinese, and other nationals living in Pakistan.

8.7 million people in Pakistan identify as Hindus, Christians, Ahmadis, and other religions.

A concerning 25.37 million children aged 5-16 are out of school, representing 3.10 percent of the total population. The disability rate is 3.30 percent. The year 2023 saw the highest population growth rate since 2017. The literacy rate in Pakistan is 61 percent, with urban areas showing a 68 percent literacy rate per mile, while rural areas have a 53 percent literacy rate per mile.

The population census reported that the number of out-of-school children is highest in Punjab (9.6 million), followed by Sindh (7.8 million), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (4.9 million), and over 50 million children in Balochistan.

The report also highlights that 79 percent of the population is under 40 years old. Specifically, 40.56 percent of the population is under 15 years old, and 26 percent are aged 15-29 years.
