Samsung is Working on New Type of AI Smartphones

Samsung is betting big on artificial intelligence (AI) to reshape the smartphone industry. The company’s mobile division, led by President TM Roh, is pouring most of its resources into developing AI-powered devices.

Roh hints at a dramatic hardware transformation while we’ve already seen glimpses of Samsung’s AI software in recent Galaxy phones.

In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Roh suggested that future Samsung phones could look vastly different from today’s rectangular models. Although specifics are scarce, “mobile” AI phones could mean larger screens, more sensors, or even new form factors.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra and Z Fold 6 have already showcased the potential of AI, transforming simple sketches into detailed images with the S Pen. However, the company’s ambitions extend far beyond image manipulation. AI will be integrated into audio, text, video, and 3D content creation.

To enhance the AI experience, Samsung is also exploring the role of accessories, such as its headphones, which will offer features like language translation. Samsung’s foldable phones, particularly the Z Fold 6, are uniquely positioned to benefit from AI with dual-screen applications like interpreter mode.

While there are AI devices available, none have achieved widespread success, suggesting uncharted territory for Samsung. This ambitious venture requires substantial research and development investment as the company seeks to redefine the smartphone.
