The twin cities are experiencing heavy rainfall, causing the water level in Lai Nullah to rise and triggering pre-alert warnings for the area around the water channel.
Rain began late Saturday night and persisted until 8 a.m. on Sunday, with brief pauses. Residents in low-lying areas spent the morning clearing rainwater from their homes.
The water level in Leh Nullah rose by 12 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge and 15 feet at Kattarian Bridge, triggering a pre-alert for potential flooding. The critical flood stage is reached at 22 feet, with spillover occurring at 30 feet.
In response, WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf visited several areas including Murree Road, Sadiqabad, Nadeem Colony, and the Committee Chowk underpass to inspect drainage efforts. He announced that WASA had declared a rain emergency to prevent potential flooding in Leh Nullah and nearby regions.
Five flood response units have been set up at Moti Mahal, Liaquat Bagh, Commercial Market, and Khyaban-i-Sir Syed to address the situation.
According to the weather department, 3 mm of rain was recorded at Shamsabad, 32 mm at Kutchery, and 28 mm at Chaklala in Rawalpindi. Furthermore, Islamabad received 3 9mm of rain at Zero Point, 33 mm at Bokra, 61 mm at Golra, 84 mm at Saidpur, and 34mm at Islamabad International Airport.
The Met Office stated that monsoon currents were penetrating from the Bay of Bengal into the upper/eastern parts of the country and were likely to penetrate the central and southern parts from July 29.
