PEMRA Bans TV Channels From Making Fun of Police

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) recently issued a directive stating that TV channels have been portraying characters in police uniforms disrespectfully in comedy skits and satirical programs.

“It has been observed with grave concern that satellite TV channels while producing and airing satire programs, are using the uniforms of state institutions and law enforcement agencies in a disgraceful manner,” the directive noted.

Pemra mentioned receiving numerous complaints from viewers regarding this issue.

The regulator advised TV channels to refrain from depicting characters or using dialogues that undermine the dignity of state institutions, particularly the police, as it negatively impacts the viewers’ perception of the force.

“All satellite TV channel licensees are hereby directed to immediately stop using uniforms of state institutions and law enforcement agencies in their comedy shows and satire programs, as airing such content compromises the dignity of the uniform,” the directive stated.

Pemra reminded the TV channels that they are required to comply with the Pemra Ordinance 2002, Pemra Rules, and the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015, along with the terms and conditions of their licenses. The authority warned that any violations could result in actions under sections 27, 29-A, and 30 of the Pemra Ordinance, which empower the regulator to prohibit channels from broadcasting certain content and to revoke their licenses in case of non-compliance.
