On Tuesday, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar informed the National Assembly about installing new machinery and software to address the issue of delayed passport deliveries.
He stated that the new system is expected to increase passport printing capacity to 60,000 per day by the end of September. The minister was replying to a ‘Calling Attention Notice’ by PPP members about passport issuance delays.
Tarar hoped that the new machinery and software would not only enhance printing capacity but also help address the current backlog of applications.
He explained that the previous PDM government had initiated the order for the new system, and the interim government carried forward this process.
The minister added that the current system, installed in 2004, has a daily printing capacity of 26,000 passports. However, the system has struggled to keep up with a significant rise in applications over the past 20 years.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the number of Pakistani missions had grown from 20 to 92, with around 300 centers set up nationwide to handle applications. He assured the National Assembly that the problem would be addressed by the end of September.
