Western Digital has unveiled the world’s first 8 TB SD card and a groundbreaking 16 TB external SSD at the 2024 Future of Memory and Storage Conference. These cutting-edge storage solutions represent the company’s most advanced offerings, expanding the boundaries of memory and storage capabilities.
The newly introduced products include the SanDisk 8 TB SDUC UHS-I SD card and the 16 TB SanDisk Desk Drive external SSD. The 8 TB SD card adheres to the Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) standard and delivers read speeds of up to 100MBps, catering primarily to consumer devices. This launch comes shortly after Western Digital announced the SanDisk 4 TB MicroSD card a few months back.

Pricing and release dates for the new storage devices have not been disclosed, but premium pricing is anticipated. These products are expected to be particularly beneficial for professional photographers and videographers who demand ample storage capacity.
A SanDisk 8TB SDUC UHS-I card, when used in a high-end mirrorless camera, can store approximately 165,000 raw image files at 24 megapixels. Regardless of the photographer’s specialization or genre, this represents a substantial storage capacity on a single card.
If the 8 TB SD card delivers the promised performance and reliability, it could represent a significant advancement, offering users up to an eightfold increase in speed and substantial storage capacity. Western Digital is expected to share additional product details in the future.
