Microsoft’s Paint 3D, a significant overhaul of the classic Paint application, is nearing its end. The tech giant has announced plans to remove the app from the Microsoft Store and discontinue support later in 2024.
This decision marks a shift from the company’s earlier strategy, which saw Paint 3D introduced as a key feature for creative users in Windows 10. At one point, Microsoft had even considered replacing the long-standing MS Paint entirely with this updated version.
Microsoft is taking steps to inform Paint 3D users about the app’s impending discontinuation. A notification banner will appear within the application, alerting users to the end of support. For those who still need to view 3D content, the company suggests downloading its 3D Viewer app as an alternative.
In a shift of priorities, Microsoft has redirected its efforts towards enhancing the traditional Paint application in Windows 11. This revamped version now incorporates several popular features reminiscent of Photoshop, as well as cutting-edge AI-powered capabilities.
The decision to axe Paint 3D is the latest in a string of discontinuations, following in the footsteps of Windows Mixed Reality, which met its demise last year. The company has also reversed its integration of Microsoft Teams into Windows 11.
Looking ahead, Microsoft has announced plans to pull the plug on its support for Android apps on Windows 11, a change slated to take effect next year. These moves underscore the tech giant’s tendency to reassess and cull Windows features and applications.
