Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Thursday said that installation of a firewall is a security requirement and added that countries around the world deploy firewalls.
Talking to reporters in Islamabad, the minister said that the ministry has received complaints of internet slowdown and added that ideally, internet speed should not be slow. She said that the digital economy is reliant on high-speed internet.
The IT minister said that the ministry had asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to share data regarding internet speed for the past two weeks to see if there was any issue.
Khawaja also said that the issue related to WhatsApp has now been resolved.
The minister also highlighted that the country is facing increasing cyber-attacks and said that the state has to take the required measures to stop these attacks.
It is pertinent to mention here that the federal government blocked X in the country a few months back and in recent weeks there have been widespread reports of an internet slowdown. In recent days users were also struggling to properly use Whatsapp, one of the most popular messaging apps worldwide, and in Pakistan.
Ali Ihsan, Senior Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), has also unequivocally condemned the grave consequences of the hastily implemented national firewall.
In a statement today, he said that the imposition of the firewall has triggered enormous challenges; with prolonged internet disconnections and erratic VPN performance threatening a complete meltdown of business operations.
