In a surprising twist, Google has unveiled a compact version of its flagship device – the Pixel 9 Pro, featuring a 6.3-inch display. This announcement came alongside the introduction of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, sporting a larger 6.8-inch screen, which succeeds last year’s top-tier model.

Both new Pixel devices boast high-brightness Super Actua LTPO displays, capable of reaching an impressive 3,000 nits. These screens feature a variable refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz and are protected by flat Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The Pixel 9 Pro’s display offers a resolution of 1280 x 2856 pixels, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL steps up to 1344 x 2992 pixels.
Google has replaced the optical fingerprint scanners with ultrasonic ones in both Pixel 9 Pro models. The company claims this new technology is 50% faster, promising improved security and user experience.
Internals and Software
The Pixel 9 Pro phones use the same Tensor G4 chipset as the vanilla Pixel 9. It is a 4nm unit paired with a Titan M2 security co-processor and memory options go up to 1 TB storage and 16 GB RAM. There is also the Exynos 5400 modem inside for better efficiency.
You get Android 14 on the software side with a promise of 7 major OS updates as well as security patches. New AI features include an Add Me feature on the camera app that lets you add yourself to a group photo even if you don’t have someone else to take a photo for you. You can also use the Magic Editor to reimagine a photo, completely replacing objects in an image with something new, like replacing a road with a river for instance.

Google’s new Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL showcase an impressive camera array. Both models feature a 50MP main wide-angle camera with a 1/1.31″ sensor. Complementing this are two 48MP cameras with 1/2.55″ sensors, one for ultrawide shots and another for 5x telephoto zoom (which is exclusive to the Pros). All rear cameras are enhanced with Multi-zone LDAF (laser-assisted focus) technology, promising improved autofocus performance.
The front-facing camera sees a significant upgrade, with both Pro models now sporting a 42MP selfie shooter. This is likely utilizing the 50MP Samsung 3J1 sensor, suggesting a substantial improvement in self-portrait quality.
Battery and Pricing
Battery capacities differ between the two models, with the Pixel 9 Pro housing a 4,700 mAh battery, while the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL boasts a 5,060 mAh unit. Both devices support 45W wired charging, capable of reaching 70% battery capacity in just 30 minutes.
