Wireless & Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) Chairman Shahzad Arshad has expressed serious concern about the ongoing internet disruptions and the adverse effects they are having on the country’s economy and society.
“Over the past several weeks, Pakistan’s citizens have experienced considerable challenges due to persistent slow internet speeds across both mobile and wireline networks. These disruptions have significantly impacted businesses, education, freelancers, and essential service providers. As Chairman of WISPAP, I express deep concern about the prolonged nature of these issues and the adverse effects they are having on our economy and society,” Arshad said in a statement on Tuesday.
Arshad said that the government has attributed the slowdown to increased VPN usage among the public. However, this explanation has left many stakeholders seeking further clarity. While the government has reassured the public that no firewall or filtration systems have been installed at our international gateways, there are still concerns that need to be addressed transparently. We all must work together to fully understand and resolve these disruptions, he added.
WISPAP recognizes the government’s responsibility to address security concerns. However, if filtration systems are required, we recommend the establishment of a whitelist of essential websites, including freelancing platforms, e-marketplaces, and other digital services that enable Pakistanis to work and contribute to the global economy.
“This approach would support our digital workforce while addressing broader security objectives,” the statement said.
The WISPAP chairman said the impact of the current internet situation is widespread. Our local industry, particularly freelancers who rely on stable internet connections to work with international clients via platforms like Fiverr, is facing considerable difficulties. Many are struggling financially as their ability to earn a livelihood is compromised. Additionally, students who have increasingly relied on online education since the COVID-19 pandemic are experiencing disruptions to their studies. Essential service providers, including those in food delivery, ride-hailing, and cargo services, are also facing operational challenges due to unreliable internet.
While there has been some improvement in internet speeds recently, the situation remains unresolved. In this digital era, where Pakistan aims to lead in digital literacy and technological innovation, consistent and reliable internet access is essential for our progress, he added.
“We urge the government to prioritize resolving these issues to ensure Pakistan remains on track to becoming a leading digital economy. WISPAP is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve this goal,” the statement added.

What sort of proposal is this? He wants some sites whitelisted and the other blacklisted? Strange!
Internet should be restored in full. Any danger of security to the country or the State from internet is a mere selfish thinking by some.
This is a ridiculous proposal. Why some websites should be whitelisted. Nothing should be blocked except with a sound reasoning. Most of times these institutions name their wishes as “National security” which is invasion of privacy.

WISPAP needs to understand they want to suppress freedom of speech.it wont work because there are always loopholes.i use VPN for surfing and using WhatsApp because photos videos and voices doesnt sent or receive.even without VPN some normal sites of movies or games doesn’t load with pictures of games or download links.(mean to say they open partially and keep on loading loop).sad story.
