Electric buses in Lahore are set to begin operations in December, following the successful completion of the procurement tender by the Punjab Transport Authority.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan announced that the tender was awarded to a Chinese and Pakistani company for manufacturing the buses.
The minister added that the company will deliver 27 electric buses for Rs. 15.5 billion and establish charging stations for their operation.
The new electric buses will include an eight-year warranty for the batteries and a ten-year warranty for the bus body and other structural elements. Furthermore, the company will provide complimentary supervision and maintenance services for the first year, according to Bilal Akbar Khan.
Electric buses will initially operate on five routes, beginning with the route from the Railway Station to Green Town Hamdard Chowk. Earlier this year, the provincial government announced plans to acquire 300 electric buses for Lahore.
Moreover, 330 electric buses will be introduced in other cities across Punjab, marking a major advancement in modernizing the province’s public transportation infrastructure.
Bilal Akbar Khan had stated that the Punjab government plans to introduce 3,000 buses in the province under a five-year plan. He revealed that CM Punjab has approved a project to introduce an extensive public transport system across Punjab. Under this initiative, 657 eco-friendly buses will commence operations in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, and other cities.
