The government has denied the No Objection Certificate (NOC) required for the Pakistan U18 baseball team to participate in the 13th BFA U18 Asian Baseball Championship in Taiwan. This decision has left several players, including five Pakistani/American and one Japanese/Pakistani, stranded in Taiwan, facing eviction from their hotel by Tuesday.
The Pakistan Federation of Baseball (PFB) announced the government’s decision, highlighting the challenges faced by the team due to the denial of the NOC. The official notice from the government cited adherence to the “One China” policy as the reason for not recommending participation in sports events held in Chinese Taipei (Taiwan). This policy aligns with Pakistan’s diplomatic stance, recognizing Taiwan as part of China.
The PFB had made a desperate appeal to the government, urging intervention to allow the national team to compete in the prestigious championship. The denial of the NOC follows a decision by the Pakistan Sports Board to prevent the team from participating, which could have severe repercussions for Pakistan’s standing in international baseball.
Refusing the NOC may have significant consequences. The PFB fears that this move could result in a ban and a heavy fine from the Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA), further isolating Pakistan from the international baseball community and hindering the development of the sport within the country.
The Pakistan Federation of Baseball expressed deep disappointment over the government’s decision, emphasizing the potential damage to the sport’s growth and the opportunities lost for young athletes.
