Islamabad to Host National Hockey Championship Amid Controversy

Islamabad is set to host the 37th National Junior Hockey Championship from September 25 to October 5. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially announced the dates and venue for this event, which promises to showcase the talents of the nation’s budding hockey players.

The National Junior Hockey Championship in Islamabad is open to players born on or after January 1, 2003, ensuring a platform for the next generation of hockey stars to shine. The PHF has called upon provincial hockey associations to diligently prepare their teams, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent to sustain the sport’s legacy in Pakistan.

However, the event is not without its share of controversy. The participation of Sindh, one of the key provinces in the championship, has been clouded by allegations of mismanagement and unauthorized dealings. Akbar Ali Qaimkhani, the secretary of the recognized Sindh Hockey Association, has raised serious concerns over the PHF’s decision to engage with a parallel, unaffiliated body instead of the official Sindh Hockey Association.

Qaimkhani has expressed his discontent, stating that the PHF’s actions undermine the authority and legitimacy of the recognized provincial body. He has called upon the provincial sports minister to intervene and take strict action against those involved in operating the unauthorized organization. This controversy threatens to overshadow the championship, as it raises questions about governance and transparency within the sport’s administrative framework.

Despite these challenges, the PHF remains focused on the successful execution of the championship. The federation is committed to providing a fair and competitive environment for all participating teams, ensuring that the spirit of the game prevails over administrative disputes.
