Xiaomi Sold More Phones Than Apple in August 2024

In a significant shift within the global smartphone market, Xiaomi has secured the second position in Counterpoint Research’s monthly sell-through volumes for August. The Chinese tech giant has surpassed Apple, which now occupies the third spot, while Samsung maintains its leadership at the top of the rankings.

Xiaomi’s ascension comes despite flat shipment figures for the month. The key factor in this realignment appears to be Apple’s seasonal decline in shipments, a typical trend as consumers anticipate the launch of the new iPhone 16 series. This cyclical downturn has resulted in a temporary reduction in Apple’s market share.

Conversely, Xiaomi has demonstrated robust growth throughout 2024, posting an impressive 22% year-over-year increase in sales volume. Counterpoint analysts attribute this success to Xiaomi’s strong performance in the sub-$200 price segment. The Redmi 13 and Note 13 series have been identified as primary growth drivers, particularly in key markets such as India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.

In related news, Xiaomi might be working on its tri-fold phone now that the trend has resurfaced among Chinese vendors. Huawei recently released its first-ever tri-fold phone to the public while Tecno and Oppo showcased their concept phones.

The news comes from a Xiaomi design patent that has been kept under wraps since December 2022 but recently came to light. It shows a design similar to the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate but with a much smaller main camera island.
