Gemini AI has become a big part of Google services and apps and is even working behind the scenes of a large number of rival company offerings. This comes at a time when most tech companies are racing to offer generative AI in their products.
While there’s nothing inherently wrong with companies promoting their products, especially when it’s relevant, there’s a boundary that many believe shouldn’t be crossed and it seems Google may have done just that.
According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is now “encouraging” users to explore Gemini through a message in the Google Messages app. Instead of using a splash screen or a formal invitation, Google is sending these messages in a format that resembles a standard text message, as if coming from a friend or family member. This approach has raised eyebrows, as it feels a bit intrusive and questionable.
As the screenshot shows users receive a message saying: “Hi, I’m Gemini in Google Messages. Chat with me to draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or simply have a fun conversation.” Frankly, this is crossing a line. Google pushing Gemini as if it were a message from a friend feels deceptive and intrusive. A proper invite would’ve been fine, but this approach erodes trust.
Thankfully, you can stop it by going into Google Messages settings, finding the Gemini section, and turning off the “Show Gemini” button.
On the bright side, RCS is now available on iPhones and iOS 18. Finally, Android and iPhone users can communicate properly with full-resolution images and videos.
