Pakistan Recorded 51% Above Average Monsoon Rainfall This Year

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has revealed that the country has experienced a remarkable 51% increase in monsoon rainfall this year compared to the average.

According to the Meteorological Department, these figures reflect data collected from July 1 to September 30, 2024. Balochistan reported the highest increase, receiving 111% more rainfall than usual.

Sindh also saw significant rainfall, with levels rising by 108%. Punjab recorded a 48% increase, indicating a substantial impact on the agricultural sector and water resources. Gilgit-Baltistan experienced slightly above-normal levels, with a 2% increase in rainfall.

In contrast, some regions did not benefit from the monsoon’s abundance. Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faced deficits, with rainfall levels dropping by 21% and 5%, respectively. These disparities highlight the uneven distribution of rainfall across the country, which can lead to varied impacts on agriculture, water supply, and local ecosystems.

The overall rise in monsoon rains is likely to positively impact crop yields and water availability across various regions, promoting better agricultural outcomes. However, authorities remain vigilant, monitoring conditions to mitigate potential risks associated with excessive rainfall, including flooding and infrastructure strain in certain areas.
