A growing controversy is unfolding on Meta’s social media platform Threads, with “Threads Moderation Failures” becoming a hot topic of discussion. Users are voicing their frustrations, claiming their accounts face deletion or restrictions for unusual reasons.
In response to the mounting concerns, Adam Mosseri, who oversees Instagram and Threads, has personally engaged with some of the complaints, assuring users that he is actively investigating the issue.
While content moderation has long been a challenge for social media platforms, recent reports and firsthand accounts from The Verge staff suggest that Meta is being trigger-happy with bans. One person from The Verge staff was banned for being a child, which he is not, while another staff member was banned for jokingly saying “I want to die” from a heatwave.
The company appears to be implementing bans and restrictions far too often and far too fast.
Some users including Jorge Caballero claim that Meta’s automated moderation system has added a poorly working fact-checking system that wrongly detects content as political or controversial. This also includes suppression of posts containing factual information about critical events such as hurricanes.
The same problem is plaguing Instagram accounts where people are being banned, for instance, for being “under 13” when they aren’t. Appeals of recovery from these banned accounts are not being accepted by Meta either and people have been losing all their data included in the accounts.
While it isn’t clear what’s happening behind the scenes, it’s clear that Meta has a severe moderation problem on its hands that needs to be resolved quickly.
