German “Digital Condom” App Goes Viral, Here’s How Camdom Works

A German sexual wellness company, Billy Boy, has introduced an innovative solution to digital privacy concerns with its new application, Camdom. The app works as what developers call a “digital condom,” offering protection from people taking explicit photos of you without consent.

The application addresses a growing concern in our interconnected world: unconsented photos of private moments through smartphones. With a simple swipe, Camdom activates a protective shield that disables both camera and microphones, not only on your device but also your partner’s, and nearby Bluetooth-enabled equipment.

You can activate this shield by bringing your phones together and simply swiping a virtual button, though both phones should have the Camdom app installed. This will disable all cameras and microphones and if someone tries to take a photo or record an audio, an alarm will go off to alert you.

You also have the option to block multiple devices at once, so you and your partner can feel safe.

Deactivation is quite straightforward too. Simply do a three-second hold on the unlock buttons of both connected devices. The application includes an additional safeguard – an automatic alarm system that triggers whenever someone attempts to override the shield.

App developer Felipe Almeida said during the launch of Camdom:

Nowadays, smartphones have become an extension of our body and we store a lot of sensitive data on them. In order to protect you from the recording of non-consensual content, we’ve created the first app that can block your camera and mic simply through the use of Bluetooth.

Camdom is currently only available on Android across 30 countries including Pakistan, though it is coming to iOS soon, as per the developers.
