WhatsApp Will Soon Let You Verify Forwarded Links

WhatsApp, one of the most widely used messaging apps, continues to enhance its safety features to protect users. The Meta-owned app already offers tools like automatic spam detection and timely security alerts.

Now the app is introducing a feature in beta allowing users to verify links in messages through Google Search. This feature is now available on WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.22.19, as reported by WABetaInfo.

The screenshot below shows the option near the bottom.

The new “link info” option allows users to verify practically any link in WhatsApp, not only frequently forwarded ones. To access this, users can long-press on a link received or sent in WhatsApp, and a “Get link info on Google” option will appear beneath “Copy link” and “Open link.” Selecting this option opens the Google app’s search, showing relevant information about the selected URL, and making it easier to avoid suspicious links.

Initially, WABetaInfo identified this feature as limited to frequently forwarded links, which displayed a “Search on the web” option for additional details. However, with the latest update, this safety feature appears to be available for all links. Although it’s unclear if the older “Search on Web” option will remain alongside this, both serve distinct purposes and could coexist.

As mentioned before, the updated link verification system is currently only in beta, so it is unclear when it will get a wider release.
