The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has reported over 1,400 WhatsApp accounts being hacked in the past few months, while the actual number of hacked accounts could be higher as many people opt not to report it.
According to details, 1,426 complaints have been filed since July 1. This number reflects only registered cases, suggesting that the actual number of hacked accounts may be higher due to unreported incidents.
According to FIA data, of the 1,426 cases registered, 549 accounts were successfully restored. The agency is currently processing 877 active complaints, with 817 still under verification.
20 unresolved cases have now been escalated to formal inquiries.
The details of these hacked accounts have been submitted to the Senate. FIA also noted that there are 40 complaints for which no response or progress report has been received.
The FIA Cybercrime Wing has urged users to adopt stronger security practices to safeguard their accounts.
