Sindh has reported a significant surge in malaria cases, with over 93,000 cases recorded in the past week alone, according to sources from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ARY News reported on Wednesday.
NIH sources confirmed that 93,002 malaria cases were reported across Sindh within the week. Larkana registered the highest number with 10,427 cases, followed by Khairpur with 7,858 cases. Other affected districts include Qambar (7,525 cases), Mirpurkhas (5,655), Dadu (5,980), Badin (4,204), Sanghar (5,488), Tharparkar (4,099), Tando Allahyar (4,130), Sukkur (4,249), Naushehro Feroze (3,682), Shikarpur (4,186), and Umerkot (3,546). In Karachi, over 1,000 cases were reported, with Malir leading at 566 cases, followed by 204 in District West, 161 in Central, 140 in East, 68 in Korangi, 41 in South, and 24 in Kemari.
Meanwhile, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chief Minister Amin Gandapur’s Health Adviser, Ehtesham Ali, recently took notice of 54,000 malaria cases reported across the province this year. He instructed all District Health Officers to implement immediate control measures and submit reports to his office. The southern districts are particularly affected, with cases rising rapidly due to climate change.
According to a provincial health department report, district Khyber recorded 10,000 cases from January to August 2024. Other affected areas include Shangla (6,000 cases), Battagram (3,000), DI Khan (4,000), Tank and Karak (2,000 each), and Lakki Marwat (3,000).
